Molise

far from the mass tourism

Molise

I decide to travel in Molise and include this region in my network, after I have meet Michele, a guy from Termoli, at the Italia al Dente in Amsterdam. He told me about his land, while tasting wine and caciocavallo, with such passion and genuine intention that I said to myself: I must visit Molise!Molise is a little region mostly undiscovered from the mass tourism, people are genuine, and the traditions are intact, as you can find in the large quantity of excellent typical food available, such as truffles, both black and white, cheese, "Capocollo" and pure Extra Vergine Oil of Olive. The shape of the territory is rectangular, in the average composed by mountains and hills that nearly arrive to …

Termoli

The old town of Termoli has medieval origin, is on a promontory of the Adriatic coast and is dominated by the imposing bulk of the Castle Federico. The fortress, from the simple and austere architecture, was built in the eleventh century and was located in an area completely fortified with walls and watchtowers. In addition to the Castle, in the old town of Termoli is another symbol of the city: the Cathedral of St. Basso. Founded in the twelfth century on the remains of earlier churches, the Cathedral is one of the finest examples of Romanesque church in the region. The facade is a hut and in the lower part is decorated with a series of blind arches, while the interior has three naves, an apse. The most peculiar attraction is the Trabucchi Certainly, tools once used by fishermen to hoist the nets after fishing.

Sant’Angelo Limosano

For every one who likes to discover real village of South Italy far from mass tourism the visit will start certainly from Sant’Aneglo Limosano. 355 citizens, situated at 900 metres above sea level, at the foot of castle ruins, Sant'Angelo Limosano benefits from a panoramic view encompassing the Tremiti islands and the peaks of the Maiella Range.  In the town, it is possible to visit the parish church, the ancient "Chiesa di S. Pier Celestino", transformed into a barn by order of Cardinal Orsini in 1695.  Equally noteworthy is the "Fonte di S. Pietro" which, after a dry winter, begins to flow again before the feast of Sant' Angelo's patron saint on 19 May. In addition to the feast day of Sant' Angelo's patron saint, villagers celebrate the "Madonna delle Stelle" on 22 August.  For those among you who love conviviality, 18 August is the village feast of "Pezzate e Fasciuole" (pasta and beans).  The local cuisine is simple but extremely tasty: dishes worth sampling include grilled lamb with potatoes (cooked in the embers), pasta with beans and truffle pizza.

Hotel Residenza Sveva - Termoli

Hotel in Termoli, historical centre, near the beach, Isole Tremiti excursion.

Hotel Residenza Sveva - Termoli

Molise has much to offer in the country side, but also at the sea side there are several interesting cities. I have chose Termoli because the old town has a very nice historical centre, plenty of little restaurants or "trattoria" as we call them in Italian, where it is possible to have good seafood dishes. The “Albergo Diffuso” Residenza Sveva is in the old part of the town, and the rooms are in different locations around the square Duomo. All the rooms have AIRCO and are freshly furnished. Free access and service with sun-bed on the private beach for the clients. Also the restaurant is on the beach and serves several dishes from the tradition of Termoli. The restaurant faces an ancient “Trabucco”, a really peculiar "palafitta" used to fish. Termoli is good spot to spend couple of days also because of the wonderful islands of Tremiti, which I strongly suggest to visit. The hydrofoil will take you there in 1 hour. The Tremiti island is a full natural reserve and the coast has plenty of bay and "calette". San Domino is the biggest island, from here you can rent a little boat and go for your great excursion.
