Ischia, the largest island in the Gulf of Naples, belongs to the group of islands flegree (Ischia, Procida, and Vivara Nisida) designated as belonging to a common geological area of Campi Flegrei. The island is less than 30 kilometers from Naples and has a coastline of 34 km. With about 60 000 inhabitants (Istat 2007) is the third most populous island in Italy after Sicily and Sardinia. Ischia's climate is typically Mediterranean, made even more lenient characterized by the particular shape of the island from the heights of Mount Epomeo central: in winter the lowest average temperature is 9° C, with January the coldest month, while the highest average temperature occurs in August with 30 degrees.
